Black Easter in Gombe: Several Feared Dead as Truck Ploughs Into Christian Worshippers
What was meant to be a joyful Easter celebration turned into a devastating tragedy in Billiri, Gombe State, Nigeria, as an articulated truck rammed into a procession of Christian worshippers returning from a mountain prayer gathering. Several people are feared dead, with many others severely injured.
The horrific incident occurred on Easter Monday along the Tashan Gona area of Billiri, when the truck—reportedly loaded with goods—lost control and crashed into the crowd. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “gruesome,” with victims, mostly children and youths, crushed beyond recognition.
According to local reports, the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash and sought refuge at the Billiri Police Station. Enraged by the carnage, angry youths set the truck ablaze, describing the loss of lives as both “reckless” and “senseless.”
“Many of those affected are youths and children. The scene is an eyesore. Some victims died on the spot, while others were rushed to nearby hospitals,” an eyewitness recounted. “The driver ran away and hid inside the police station to escape mob action.”
As of the time of this report, the Gombe State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Buhari, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages remained unanswered.
The tragedy has sparked widespread mourning across the state, particularly among the Christian community, who had gathered to commemorate the resurrection of Christ. Many are calling for a thorough investigation and urgent measures to ensure safer roads and better protection during public religious events.
Community and religious leaders have appealed for calm as emotions continue to run high, while urging the authorities to ensure that justice is served.
