In a troubling continuation of violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a recent attack by armed groups in Bassa County, Plateau State, has left two men dead, one seriously injured, and also wounded a military officer. This incident has brought to light the critical issues of insecurity, displacement, and food scarcity in the region, as over 20 farmlands were reportedly destroyed.

The victims, identified as Adamu Bala (age 38) and Gado Trra (age 45), tragically lost their lives during the ambush. A third individual, who remains unnamed for safety reasons, is currently receiving medical care for bullet wounds sustained during the attack. Additionally, a member of the military was injured while responding to the situation, highlighting the risks faced by those working to maintain peace and security.

Local eyewitnesses reported that the attackers struck during the early morning hours, as farmers were on their way to their fields. A community member, wishing to stay anonymous, expressed the deep frustration felt by locals: “We are tired of burying our people.” This sentiment reflects a broader call for proactive measures to enhance safety in the area.

Community leaders are actively condemning the violence perpetrated by these armed groups, emphasizing the importance of protecting community lands and livelihoods. The persistent cycle of conflict in Plateau State, often fueled by tensions between indigenous farming communities and nomadic herders, underscores the urgent need for effective interventions.

Historically, Plateau State has experienced significant violence, as seen in incidents from March to April 2025, where over 100 lives were lost in Bokkos and Bassa counties. The repercussions of such violence extend beyond immediate casualties, leading to the displacement of countless individuals and the destruction of homes as witnessed in communities like Zikke in Bassa and Hurti in Bokkos.

As the community mourns the loss of Bala and Trra, there is a strong push for the Nigerian government to take decisive action. Stakeholders are calling for enhanced security personnel deployment and community policing initiatives to break the cycle of violence. These measures are essential for restoring peace and ensuring that communities can rebuild and thrive.
