Miango Community Under Siege: Soldiers Accused of Harassment and Assault

The Miango community is reeling from allegations of harassment and brutality by soldiers deployed to the area, raising alarm over the deteriorating relationship between security forces and residents. On November 24, 2024, from approximately 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., soldiers allegedly subjected locals to unwarranted searches, intimidation, and physical assault, leaving many residents traumatized and injured.

Eyewitness accounts reveal disturbing reports of human rights abuses. Mr. Rossi Bulus, a farmer from Kitago Community in Miango District, was reportedly beaten mercilessly by soldiers who accused him of being a militant. “I’m just a farmer, trying to make a living. I don’t know why they targeted me,” Mr. Bulus lamented.

In another incident, Mr. James Kpe of Gboro Community was assaulted in his home while resting. Soldiers reportedly pointed guns at him, demanded money, and subjected him to verbal abuse.

These actions have sparked outrage in the Miango community, where residents have long endured attacks by Fulani extremists but have little faith in the protection offered by security forces. Many locals argue that the military and police have failed to curb violence in the region, instead turning their aggression on vulnerable civilians.

Bala Platini Gado, the Farmer Caretaker Committee Chairman of Miango and a representative of the Miango Youths Development Association, issued a statement condemning the soldiers’ actions:

“We urge the authorities to investigate this incident and hold the perpetrators accountable. Our people cannot continue to suffer harassment and intimidation from those meant to protect them. This is a clear violation of human rights, and we demand justice.”

Gado emphasized the need for accountability within the Nigerian Army and Police, highlighting that rural communities like Miango face a dual crisis of extremist attacks and security force misconduct. He noted that the lack of trust in security agencies further exacerbates the region’s vulnerability.

The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the urgent need for reforms in the conduct of security forces, especially in crisis-prone regions. Activists and local leaders are calling for immediate investigations and assurances that such abuses will not recur.
