Plateau Government Flags Off Relief Distribution for Windstorm-Affected Communities

JOS, – In a show of responsive governance and empathy, the Plateau State Government has launched the distribution of relief materials to communities ravaged by recent windstorms, beginning with Bassa Local Government Area.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Deputy Governor on behalf of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, signals a strong commitment to restoring hope and dignity to those affected by the devastating natural disaster. The windstorm, which swept through several local government areas including Wase, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Jos North, left behind a trail of destruction —damaging homes, farmlands, and livelihoods.
“Today, I stand before you to initiate the distribution of relief materials for those affected by the rainstorm disaster that has impacted many of our fellow citizens,” the Deputy Governor declared at the flag-off ceremony in Bassa. “It is an honor to represent our administration in this important effort.”
The Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), under the directive of the Governor, quickly mobilized emergency resources to cushion the impact on victims. Trucks filled with essential supplies—mattresses, food items, roofing sheets, and clothing—rolled into Bassa as the first point of intervention.
“In times of crisis, it is not enough to offer sympathy. Action is our responsibility,” the Deputy Governor said. “This is a reflection of our social contract with the people—to protect, support, and rebuild lives.”
Representing PLASEMA, the Executive Secretary lauded Governor Mutfwang’s timely and humane response.
“Your Excellency, your leadership continues to stand tall in the face of adversity,” he stated. “These relief materials are more than supplies—they are instruments of healing, resilience, and renewal.”
The atmosphere at the event was charged with both emotion and gratitude. Community elders, traditional rulers, and hundreds of residents gathered to witness the ceremony, which brought renewed optimism to families that had lost nearly everything.
Among those who spoke was Engr. Isreal Amabu, the Deputy Chairman of Bassa LGA, commended the government’s swift intervention.
“We are truly grateful for this lifeline extended to our people,” he said. “However, we plead for sustained assistance. The damage is far-reaching, and our communities require continued support to fully recover.”
This multi-phase relief effort will extend to other affected LGAs in the coming days, with PLASEMA coordinating distribution based on assessed needs and severity of impact. Local volunteers and security personnel are assisting to ensure transparency and fairness in the process.
The Deputy Governor concluded with a rallying call for collective resilience:
“Let us come together not just as a government and citizens, but as one family—united in compassion and resolve. With unity and God’s grace, we will rebuild stronger and better than before.”
