Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande Celebrates Grassroots Football as Jos North Claims Victory in 2024 Plateau State Governor’s Cup

Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association (PFA), has emphasized the vital role of grassroots football in cultivating future talents, essential for both national and international achievements. During the finals of the 2024 Plateau State Governor’s Cup, he expressed strong optimism about the future of Nigerian football, highlighting that players from this tournament are already being considered by prestigious teams such as Mighty Jet and Plateau United.

“This tournament not only showcases our dedication to grassroots football development but also serves as a vital platform to identify and nurture young talents. The Governor’s Cup plays a crucial role in enhancing the football culture in Plateau State and across Nigeria. Given Nigeria’s recent qualifications for various international tournaments, including the Nations Cup, we are confident that we will see remarkable developments by 2025,” he stated.

The grand finale culminated in a thrilling match where Jos North Local Government triumphed over Shendam Local Government with a narrow 1-0 victory. The decisive moment came in the 49th minute when Francis Izang skillfully converted an early corner kick delivered by Tajudeen.

Held in Jos, the event honored the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including the Senator of Plateau South Senatorial District and former Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong; Plateau State Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Hon. Nkup Noel; as well as the Chairmen of Jos North and Shendam Local Governments, Barr. JK Chris and Hon. Nicholas Kemushe.

Although Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang could not attend, he was represented by the Honourable Commissioner of Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Laven Joshua Ubandoma. Additionally, attendees included representatives from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), FIFA, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), and football association chairmen from all 17 local governments in Plateau State.

The closing ceremony celebrated all participating local governments with certificates of participation, while medals and trophies were awarded to the top three teams. Jos North Local Government proudly received the championship prize amidst enthusiastic support from their fans.

Yahaya-Kwande highlighted the tournament’s significance in strengthening community engagement and promoting local football talent. He affirmed that initiatives such as this are essential for enabling Plateau State and Nigeria to excel on the global stage.
